The Tiv Cultural and Social Association on Monday appealed to warring factions in the lingering crisis in Taraba to eschew violence and embrace peace for rapid development.
The President of the association, Chief Goodman Dahida, made the appeal in a statement in Jalingo.
Dahida, who decried comments at social gatherings and the social media which he said seemed to suggest that Tiv and the Fulani were at war, stressed that “we are not at war with Fulani and we are not contemplating war with any group”.
He added: “The Tiv as a people are predominantly farmers who are always in the bush engaging in their farming business, just like the Fulani nomads who equally have their cattle to take care of.
“On our part, we have directed traditional rulers to help security personnel to fish out criminals in their localities and we want to appeal to opinion leaders in the state to help government in fighting crime for a peaceful society.”
He appealed to the people of the state to embrace the ranch establishment law to check the continuous killing and promote peaceful coexistence.
The association head also urged herders and farmers to take advantage of the ongoing sensitisation about the ranch law for peace and development in the state.
He called on the leadership of Miyetti Allah Association to check criminal elements among members for peaceful coexistence in the state.
He condemned the killings in Taraba, Benue, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Nasarawa and other parts of the country, saying it was negatively affecting both herdsmen and farmers, and hindering development in those states.
