Tribune’s new office complex at Imalefalafia Street, Oke Ado in Ibadan. The Tribune office had just moved from Yemetu Adeoyo area, Ibadan to the new site. Governor Ahmed, who made this assertion during a condolence visit to the Awolowo family in Ikenne, Ogun State, stressed that the political class and lovers of democracy in Nigeria would sorely miss her motherly and stabilising role in the country’s political space

The Zonal Coordinator, South West Zone One of NSC, Dr. Steve Olarinoye, on Tuesday led the NSC contingent that included the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium manager, Alhaji Ahmed Jumare, and the head of administration of the zone, Grace Majoyegbe, to Ikenne, the ancestral home of the late sage, to present a condolence letter of the commission to the family

These loving words Awo first wrote about his HID in his autobiography My Early Life, published in 1968, remained true about the woman up till the time of her death. And what better epitaph after her demise at a very ripe age? Everyone knows the genuine, profuse and diverse outpourings of grief that have trailed the demise of the Awolowo family’s matriarch has witnessed one consistent refrain: that the Awolowo family has lost its jewel of inestimable value.

Uduaghan described Awolowo’s death as a big loss

HID, as she was fondly called, died on Saturday at the family’s country home in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State

Sources in her residence at Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, said Mama, as she is fondly called, died after a meeting and lunch of pounded yam

Adeyeye, in his congratulatory message to Mama Awolowo on her 99th birthday on Monday, said he was particularly happy that in spite of the challenges of her age, mama has remained unwavering in her commitment to the unity and progress of the Yoruba race

“We are particularly happy that inspite all challenges, Mama has remained undaunted in her commitment to the unity and wellness of the Yoruba race

He promised to stand by the deceased’s family during and after their period of grief

Awolowo spoke just as the Yoruba Unity Forum rose from a meeting in Ikenne, Ogun State, calling on President Goodluck Jonathan to take urgent steps towards reversing the alleged marginalisation of Yoruba people in political appointments by the Federal Government
