The Senate on Thursday waded into alleged discrimination against not less than 900 police officers on the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police in the recent promotion exercise by the Nigerian Police Force.
A group, Concerned Nigerian Citizens, in a petition against what it termed discrimination against some officers, accused officers in the office of the Force Secretary of perpetrating the discriminatory exercise.
The group also accused one Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Discipline, Jonathan Toworu, of sidelining 900 police officers on the rank of ASP for promotion.
The petition against the discriminatory promotion has already been forwarded to Presidency and the Police Service Commission for urgent intervention.
The group, in the petition signed by Fred Nwa, dated March 7, 2016, which was submitted to the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, and obtained by our correspondent, lamented that some of the coursemates of affected officers were promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police or given double promotion to the rank of Superintendent of Police last year, but they were not given consideration by the Force Headquarters.
The petitioner alleged that even with available slots of 6,899 for officers on the rank of DSP in the Force, going by directives given to that effect by the Police Service Commission, the Police highest hierarchy in Abuja is not looking in that direction for such exercise.
According to them, Toworu had at different fora in recent times boasted that the affected officers of Course 1/2010, will never be promoted as long as he occupies his seat where he had allegedly spent 10 years.
The petitioners therefore recommended that the Presidency should mandate the Police Management Team and the Police Service Commission to look into the discrimination in the promotion scheme and in particular look into the activities of Toworu alongside the evil manipulation and selective promotion perpetuated by his office.
