The Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Balarabe Kakale, says high prevalence of diseases can be reduced by 50 per cent if people sustain environmental and personal hygiene.
Kakale said this in Sokoto on Saturday during a special environmental sanitation organised by his Ministry.
Kakale said: “Most of the diseases plaguing Nigerians were related to the contamination of the environment, food and water sources.
“These diseases can, therefore, be kept at bay or drastically reduced if we keep the environment clean.
“These diseases include malaria, cholera, whooping cough, measles, gastroenteritis and other related communicable diseases.”
The commissioner also stated that the recent outbreaks of severe malaria recorded in parts of Sokoto North Local Government Area had been brought under control.
He said: “We are no longer having high number of cases; most of the beds at the clinics in the area are now empty.
“But the residents of the area must ensure environmental and personal hygiene to sustain the tempo.”
The Chairman of Sokoto North Local Government, Alhaji Aminu Ibrahim, also said that the local government had mobilised more health personnel, drugs and medicament to the affected areas.
Ibrahim said: “So far, so good, and we thank God that the hitherto ugly situation has been brought under total control.
“We have also deployed more sanitary inspectors to mobilize the residents to keep their environment clean.”
