The Nigeria Olympic Committee has warned any member of Team Nigeria contingent wishing to satisfy his or her emotional needs to be ready to rely on the protective condoms provided by the tournament organisers as the committee will not be providing any for them.
The President of the committee, Engineer Habu Gumel, handed the warning while unveiling the official online medium for the Games, Team Naija, in Abuja.
Gumel argued that it is the responsibility of the tournament organisers to provide condoms for the participants in the Games.
According to him: “We have no plan to travel to Rio with condoms because it is the responsibility of the organisers not the NOC to supply them to everybody in Rio during the Games.”
Meanwhile, the committee further revealed that no fewer than 24 states and the Federal Capital Territory have indicated interest to participate in the Olympic Day celebration commencing on July 2 across the states of the federation.
Announcing the arrangement, the chairman of the Nigeria Sport for All Commission, Prince Henry Amike, said: “The Olympic Day Celebration is scheduled to take place on Saturday July 2, 2016 in states that indicated interest to host the event. The education aspect of the event will hold on June 23-24 in Lagos with 5000 students participating.
“Olympic Day is an ideal platform to highlight the benefits of physical activities in general, particularly for young people which allows them to learn about Olympic values and to put them into practice in their everyday life.
“In order to allow people of all age groups to participate in the celebration, the programme has been broken down in stages of 3km, 6km and 10km to accommodate everybody. The states that have so far indicated interest to organise the event are Bayelsa, Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Abia, Lagos, Imo, Adamawa, Edo, Delta, Katsina, Borno, Ogun, Rivers, Niger, Gombe, Kebbi, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Katsina, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kebbi and FCT while other states are still expected before the date of the event.
“We also want to use this medium to inform participants that Olympic Day celebration is not a competition to win prizes, but to serve as a reminder that exercise holds a lot of promises in helping mankind to stay healthy through sports as a way of life.
“The educational arm of the program, which will take place only in Lagos, children from various secondary schools have been invited to participate on the following programmes like art exhibition and dance, Olympic quiz competition and distribution of prices to winners, jogging and walking from designated route.”
