Prof. Titus Eze, a former Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, has criticised moves by the state government to conduct local government election this year.
Eze told the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka, the state capital, on Monday that there were many problems that needed solutions before the proposed election in October.
He said the problems included the sincerity of the state government and the composition of the ANSEIC board.
He said: “There are a lot of unresolved problems if they are saying they want to do election.
“The ANSIEC is not properly constituted to conduct an election.
“Therefore I don’t see the legal possibility unless somebody wants just to waste the state resources and play jamboree.”
Eze said that adequate preparations were made for the conduct of the election in 2010 and 2011 when he held sway but that all were aborted.
He said: “I came in, wrote proposals, made timetable and funds were advanced; N100 million by the state government, so everything was getting on course.
“Suddenly I was called and the thing was terminated under the insensible reason that the voters’ register was not okay.”
Reacting, Vincent Ezenwajiaku, the state Commissioner for Special Duties, also told NAN that the state government would ensure that the held in October.
Ezenwajiaku said: “I assure you that once Governor Peter Obi proposes a date for the council polls it will happen.
“He is going to do it as a gentleman, unless if there are unforeseen circumstances.
“He would do everything possible to ward off any hindrance.”
Meanwhile, Sylvester Okonkwo, the Chairman of the commission, recently expressed its preparedness to conduct the elections.
Okonkwo announced the readiness while playing host to the Movement for the Conduct of Local Government Election at the commission’s headquarters in Awka.
