The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has reacted to the payment of pro-rated salaries his members by the Federal Government.
Osodeke spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday following complaints by ASUU members on the payment.
The Eagle Online recalls that members of ASUU had cried out late last week over what they described as “half salary” for October.
The University of Jos branch of the union had said lecturers will not return to class until they are fully paid.
Explaining the rationale behind the payment, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said it followed the “No work, no pay” rule.
He said members of ASUU who also belong to the Medical and Dental Consultants Association were paid in full because they abstained from the strike.
But speaking with the NAN, Osodeke said members of the union were shocked when they received the half salary.
According to Osodeke: “We cannot understand what is going on.
“How do you pay people who are just resuming from a prolonged strike half salary?
“Well, what we need to do is to sort it out with the Minister of Labour and Employment.”
