A rights activist and trusted aide of President Goodluck Jonathan, Oronto Douglas, is dead.
Douglas was aged 50.
He died of complications from cancer.
Douglas, who is Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Research and Documentation, has been battling cancer for several years.
He came into public light as a human rights activist, with special emphasis on the environmental degradation of the Niger Delta, where he hails from.
Like President Jonathan, he hailed from Bayelsa State.
Douglas co-founded the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth, Nigeria.
