Polio: Adamawa apologises to WHO over misinformation

The Adamawa State Government has apologised to the World Health Organisation over misinformation on the state’s polio status.
The apology was contained in a statement issued to newsmen on Tuesday in Yola by the Director of Information and Public Affairs, Ministry of Health, Abubakar Muhammed.
The statement said the ministry regretted its earlier report which announced that WHO has declared the state as Polio free.
The statement said: “We regret to inform WHO and the general public on the publication in some national dailies that WHO declared Adamawa as a Polio free state.
“The statement contained in the publication as stated by Dr Nuhu Ningi was later confirmed as misleading and didn’t convey the intended message.
“We highly apologise and regret all the inconveniences this misinformation might have caused.”
According to the statement, the state government and its partners, especially WHO, would continue to work hand in hand to ensure that all the children in Adamawa State are protected against polio and other vaccine preventable diseases.
NAN recalls that the Ministry through its Director of Information, Malam Abubakar Muhammed, had on April 15 in a statement claimed that Dr. Nuhu Ningi, a former WHO Coordinator in the state, has confirmed that Adamawa State was free of Polio virus since 2009.
