Mild drama played out in Rivers State after a team of policemen stormed the home of woman, said to be the wife of a General Overseer of a Port Harcourt, Rivers State-based church, alleged to be selling babies to rich society women for prices ranging from N2.5 million to N6 million.
The arresting team was stopped in its track by another team of policemen who were protecting the woman and are apparently on her payroll.
The first set of policemen comprised of operatives of the Police Special Fraud Unit, Lagos State and men of the Rivers State Police Command.
The second team, which was protecting the woman, described as chief suspect in many baby selling syndicates in Nigeria, were policemen from the Special Protection Unit.
It was gathered that the atmosphere was so tensed that the policemen were ready to shoot each other’s team.
While one team was determined to make arrest, the other was equally bent on protecting the woman from being arrested.
While this drama was going on, the suspect, identified as Dr. Emeka Precious Chinyere, escaped and is said to have traveled to the United States of America.
Although she claims to be a medical doctor, many believe it is a lie.
It has also been discovered that Chinyere is the popular wife (Mummy) of a General Overseer of a church located in Port Harcourt.
A police source said the botched arrest and eventual discovery of Chinyere as a sourcing point was the discovery of the biggest child factory in the southern part of Nigeria, where operators sell children to desperate women, especially rich ones, for between N2.5 million and N6 million in Rivers State.
The police said it was attempting to trail Chinyere, who was the major suspect behind the booming business in Nigeria.
The fleeing suspect, according to police sources, had been linked to many of the botched child traffic plans, uncovered by embassies of foreign countries in Nigeria.
It will be recalled that the police at SPFU had about two years ago failed to track down Chinyere, after a DNA test on a woman, Esther Soyebo, who attempted to secure an American visa for her baby at the embassy, indicated that she was not the biological mother of the subject.
Soyebo could not locate the address of the hospital, after claiming that she got there in the night and left in the morning, thus preventing the police from getting close to Chinyere.
Chinyere fled, but a nurse and a supposedly pregnant woman, who was later medically tested and found to be negative, were arrested at her hospital in Port Harcourt.
A police source said: “It’s funny and ironic that the suspect escaped from being arrested by policemen who stormed her Port Harcourt home where her ‘pregnant women’ we’re delivered of their babies.
“Policemen from the Special Protection Unit, armed with guns, shielded her and prevented policemen from the PSFU and Rivers State Police Command to gain access to her.”
It was further gathered that Chinyere had been on the police wanted list over cases of miracle babies’ investigations.
She became one the most wanted women by the police based on series of petitions from many embassies, after medical examinations revealed failed DNA tests for visa applicants.
This present onslaught on Chinyere started again after the Commissioner of Police in charge of PSFU received a petition from the United States of America Consulate to investigate a Nigerian-American who applied for an American passport for her baby.
The US Consulate said: “One Christiana Ogeyi Omagu, a female Nigerian-American citizen with Nigerian Passport AO49173747 and US passport 458926040 appeared at the consulate in pursuance of a US passport for a male child, whom she claimed she gave birth to at God’s Gift Clinic and Maternity in Elelenwa, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.”
The DNA paternity and maternity test results by the embassy indicated that the applicant and her alleged husband, Donald Omagu, were not the biological parents of the baby boy.
The embassy said that aside from the applicants submitting false documents, they also claimed that a certain doctor, who Mrs. Omagu identified as Chinyere Precious, took her delivery at God’s Gift Clinic and Maternity in Rivers State.
Police investigations revealed that the hospital was actually in existence but a nurse, Peace Effiong, who was arrested at the hospital, situated at 16, School Road, Elelenmo, Port Harcourt, told the police that no child delivery had ever taken place at the hospital since she joined some months back.
Effiong informed the police that pregnant women, who were due for delivery, were usually taken to the doctor’s home for “proper delivery”.
Preliminary investigations by the police also revealed that Chinyere for long been on the wanted list for allegedly being responsible for the mystery delivery of some women, whose children’s DNA test at the embassy had indicated negativity with the presented parents.
Mrs. Omagu, in her statement, said she paid M2.5 million to Chinyere before she got pregnant and eventually delivered at her hospital.
Mrs. Omagu said that she doubted the pregnancy after medical tests were carried out in the United States indicated that she was not pregnant.
She however added that Chinyere, who came to the US around that time, assured her of the pregnancy and advised her to come to Nigeria to deliver.
Mrs. Omagu came to Nigeria in February 2013 after she was introduced to Dr. Chinyere and in March, Chinyere confirmed that Mrs. Omagu was pregnant prompting her to return to the her base in the US, with the hope of delivering the baby at one of the hospitals there.
She had no choice than to return to Nigeria after Chinyere called her in February 2014 and informed her that her delivery was due.
She claimed to have given birth to the baby on February 16, 2014 at the doctor’s maternity home in Elelenmo.
Another pregnant woman, Victoria Acholonu, who was arrested at the maternity home, after having being called by the doctor to come and deliver, told the police that she paid N2.9 million to Chinyere before she could conceive.
She added that the doctor had called her that her delivery period was near.
Pregnancy tests on Acholonu at the police medical centre reportedly indicated that she was not pregnant, even with her bulging tummy and a high sense of anticipation that she had come to deliver a baby.
She told the police that many of them contacted the doctor and paid between N2.5 and N6 million, depending on the condition of the mother.
Another police source, who also pleaded anonymity, said: “The woman is very powerful.
“She has always found a way to wriggle out of police arrest.
“She has been very evasive to the police at PSFU despite the numerous evidences against her.
“She was once arrested by the police at Elelenwo Divisional Police Station after one of her victims’ husband became suspicious and invited the police, who invaded her home at the point of delivery, but she escaped justice after an unidentified powerful person from above intervened.”
Effiong, who claimed to have joined the hospital about six months ago, told the police in her statement that pregnant women, who were due for delivery, were always taken away from the hospital to the doctor’s home at Harvest Assembly Avenue, Stallion Road, Elelenwo, Port Harcourt
Policemen from the Police Special Protection Unit, who got wind of the attempts by operatives of the SFU and Rivers State Police Command to effect the arrest of the suspect, after tracking her down, aided her escape.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of Rivers State, Tunde Ogunsakin, promised that the police in the state would get to the root of the whole incident.
Ogunsakin said that the police are working with the Nigeria Medical Association in the state, not only to find and arrest the Chinyere, but to also investigate the veracity of her claim of being a medical doctor.
