The Nigeria Police Force has addressed a viral video involving Vincent Makinde, a dismissed officer seen in leg restraints.
The police also refuted claims that Makinde was detained without justification.
It also responded to calls for his release by prominent legal and human rights advocate, Femi Falana, SAN.
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) had called for Makinde’s release, alleging inhumane treatment and questioning the circumstances of his detention.
Responding to the allegation, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement on Wednesday clarifying the circumstances surrounding Makinde’s case.

According to Adejobi, Makinde was dismissed in 2022 following a comprehensive investigation and orderly room trial, during which he was found guilty of multiple offences, including abuse of office, extortion, gross misconduct, dereliction of duty, and insubordination.
“Following his dismissal, Makinde assaulted a senior police officer and escaped lawful custody. In June 2024, he resurfaced, fraudulently portraying himself as an active officer with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, despite never being cleared of his previous offences or promoted,” Adejobi said.
“Makinde was arrested after being found impersonating an officer and armed with a rifle.
“During the arrest, police operatives reported that he displayed violent and aggressive resistance, necessitating the use of leg restraints for safety and to prevent another escape.
“The use of restraining devices is a globally recognized practice for individuals who actively and aggressively resist lawful detention,” Adejobi explained.
He added that Makinde’s current detention is in line with established protocols to ensure the safety of all parties involved.
Further investigations have also uncovered additional criminal activities linked to him beyond those that led to his initial dismissal.
Makinde remains in custody as investigations into his impersonation and other offences continue.
The Police emphasized their commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in handling cases involving misconduct within the Force.
“We strive to maintain the public’s trust and confidence by ensuring that personnel who violate the law are held accountable for their actions,” the statement read.
The Force reiterated its dedication to reinforcing the integrity of policing in Nigeria, assuring the public of its steadfast pursuit of justice.
