The Oyo State Police Command on Friday announced the killing of four car robbers from two different operations in Ibadan, the state capital.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, made the announcement at a news conference held at the command’s headquarters, Eleyele in Ibadan.
Indabawa said three robbers were killed during an exchange of gunfire with policemen along the Ibadan-Oyo Road, with the police recovering a Honda Accord car marked Lagos TD 206 AAA.
The police commissioner said one Adeniran Ademola of Elewuro area of Akobo, Ibadan had earlier reported that his car and some other belongings were stolen from his house on Wednesday.
He said: “The police went in search of the car immediately, with a renowned volunteer in crime-fighting, Alhaji Kwara Azare, joining the command.
“At about 12.30am of Friday, we received a piece of information about the whereabouts of the car and it was trailed towards the Ibadan-Oyo Road.
“When the three occupants in the vehicle discovered that they were being trailed, they diverted to Alaaka Road, where they opened fire on the police team.”
Indabawa said during the gunfire exchange, the three suspected armed robbers were killed and the vehicle was recovered.
He said: “We also recovered one AK47 rifle, one locally-made double-barrelled gun and a cut-to-size shotgun.
“Other things recovered from the robbers included 101 rounds of live ammunitions, nine rounds of live cartridges and the sum of N17,170.”
Indabawa said another robber was killed on Friday by men of the Federal Highway Patrol stationed at Seko Area, near Dominion University, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
He said: “The team of officers sighted a green Toyota Camry, marked Lagos SD 57 AAA coming from Lagos and tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop.
“He was pursued and the occupants of the car opened fire on the pursuing policemen.
“During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, one of the robbers was hit and killed, while others escaped into the bush.
“We recovered the car and two shotguns, 12 rounds of live cartridges, one knife, four different types of handsets and one cutlass.
“The vehicle particulars found in the car revealed that it belonged to one Omowunmi Abubakar of Yinusa Balogun Bus Stop, Okota Palace Way in Lagos.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police has assured members of the public of their safety, saying criminals were in for a hard time in Oyo State this year.
He called on the owners of the recovered vehicles to come forward with proof of ownership to retrieve the car from the police.
