Gwottson Fom (PDP), member representing Jos South Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, has described the recent extension of the tenure of four local government management committees by the legislature as illegal.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Assembly’s Speaker, Abok Ayuba (APC), had in a statement on Thursday announced the extension of the management committees.
Those affected were Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos North and Jos South local governments.
Ayuba said the extension was for three months.
The affected local governments have been under caretaker committees since October 2018 when elections were held in 13 out of 17 local governments in the state.
But Fom in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Jos, disassociated himself from the extension.
The lawmaker said the people of the four local governments deserved to have elections conducted to enable them to elect their leaders as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
He said: “The State House of Assembly which I am a member representing Jos South never debated nor held any session on the present issue of this tenure extension in the week under review.
“My wish and prayer is that the State Government should conduct elections in these affected areas without further delay in the interest of fairness, equity and justice.”
