The factional National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, on Tuesday in Abuja identified peace and cooperation between the old and new breed politicians as the necessary ingredients for rapid development of Nigeria.
Tukur stated this in his 78th birthday message to the nation, stressing that the country would witness rapid progress if the old and young politicians combine their efforts.
“We can achieve nothing in an atmosphere of disunity, united we stand but divided we fall,” Tukur said.
He urged new breed politicians to accord due respect to the senior citizens.
Tukur said: “The older politicians should not be written off or regarded as spent political forces.
“We are still relevant to the nation and the younger politicians will benefit greatly from our experiences, wise counsel, guidance and discipline.”
He maintained that no young generation, which treated her old and experienced statesmen with disrespect and without decorum, ever succeeded.
The chairman therefore called for peace among all Nigerians, stressing that it was invaluable and the minimum condition for development.
He said: “It is the foundation for friendly and mutual concourse.
“It is perhaps the most important element required for meaningful and sustainable progress of any nation.”
Tukur further charged politicians to embrace peace in order to the enthrone true democracy in the country.
He also called on all leaders in the country to place national interest above their personal interests in all their actions.
“We owe our nation a duty to make her peaceful, after all we have no other home than Nigeria,” Tukur said.
He thanked God almighty for the gift of life and for having clocked 78 years.
He said: :I remain eternally grateful, humble and challenged to make Nigeria a better place than I met it.
“I pray that Nigeria will be great, strong and prosperous.”
