The President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Nosakhare Ogieva-Okunbor, says his members do not import explosive cooking gas.
Ogieva-Okunbor told the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja, that his members were registered and could not be involved in shady deals.
NAN recalls that there have been reported cases of gas explosions as a result of poor quality cooking gas.
He said: “Before you become a member of the association, you must be licensed by the Department of Petroleum Resources.
“So to say my members did that is untrue because people wake up and set up gas plants. They are not members of NALPGAM.”
According to him, the association is doing its best to enlighten Nigerians on the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas especially as it is a viable alternative to develop the nation’s economy.
Ogieva –Okunor said: “Ninety per cent of what we consume in Nigeria comes from the Nigeria Liquefied and Natural Gas.
“As at 2017, we consumed about 700,000 metric tonnes and that is just scratching at the surface. We have capacity to produce about five million metric tonnes annually.”
Ogieva-Okunbor said that with recent government involvement, there had been steady gas supply in the country.
He said: “Our effort is assisting a deliberate policy by NLNG to supply Nigerian market with more of their products.
“As we speak, the issue of scarcity is a thing of the past, as a result of a deliberate government policy that was put in place and NLNG came in to remove the bottlenecks that we were having by increasing the jetties we have in Apapa.
“Now, we have a jetty that every ship can come in and can be discharged into storage facilities in Lagos.
“You will notice that most times in December, there is scarcity but due to efforts put in place by NLNG in 2017, there was no scarcity. It is now a thing of the past in the LPG industry.”
According to him, Nigeria is one of the lowest LPG consuming nations in Africa, but if the policy put in place now is properly implemented, within the next five years we will be ranked as one of the highest consuming LPG nations in Africa.
On safety, he said the association had a training school where members were trained regularly.
NAN reports that the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr Maikanti Baru, had said he was looking forward to seeing that all domestic cooking in Nigeria were done using locally-produced LPG.
Baru urged the association to embark on public enlightenment of Nigerians on the advantages of switching to LPG for all their domestic cooking.
