Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday in Abuja received a delegation from General Electric and urged the company to speed up its infrastructural engagements in Nigeria.
Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President (Office of the Vice-President), said in a statement that the Vice President made the call at a meeting with the officials of the company, led by its Global Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Immelt.
Akande quoted Osinbajo as citing some of the company’s engagements in Nigeria to include the proposed concessioning deal of the East-West lines of the Nigeria Railway Corporation in which the General Electric would be investing $2 billion into the Nigerian economy.
Other GE projects are the refurbishment of the single-gauge lane of the lines and the building/assembling of train coaches in Nigeria.
Osinbajo said: “It is important we move quickly this year and get things done, whatever it is that is required to make things move faster, let us know.”
In his own remarks, Immelt agreed with Osinbajo that 2017 was critical for the various GE projects in power, gas and transport infrastructure in Nigeria.
The statement said the Ministers of Transportation, Power, Works and Housing Minister as well as Finance attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the Nigerian Fisheries Forum also met with the Vice President in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The forum urged the federal government to support the restoration of the fishing industry in the country.
Responding, Osinbajo challenged the Forum, led by its President, Elder Philip Amiengheme, to develop a concise roadmap for the industry, which the Federal Government could consider.
