The Acting Executive Chairman of the Plateau State Board of Internal Revenue Service, Arlat Dashe Dasogo, said the service has put in place strategies aimed at boosting revenue generation and proper utilisation.
Dasogo disclosed this on Tuesday at the board’s headquarters in Jos while briefing newsmen on the activities of the service in the past year and its desired plan to consolidate and improve significantly in 2017.
He said the service intends to adopt a wholistic approach to revenue generation by engaging staff of the board and other ministries.
He added that the era of illegal schools will be over in the state.
According to him, the service will liaise with the Ministry of Education to ensure schools that have not completed their registration do it and pay their renewal fees as well as ground rents as and when due.
Dasogo said the tax approach will be friendly, but would not tolerate a situation where citizens do not pay their taxes.
He said part of the strategies adopted in the past three years has positively boosted the revenue generation in the state and assured that the N17 billion 2017 budget estimate for the service would be achieved, stressing that it has so far recorded N1.3 billion as monthly revenue generation.
He said: “Given the enormous responsibility of generating funds for government to finance its people-oriented projects, the service in the 2016 state budget was given a target of N13 billion.
“To achieve this, the service looked inwards and employed some strategies to leverage on the automation process, which makes it mandatory for payment to be made through banks, POS machines and the internet via tax payers’ Tax Identification Number.
“The service, in consultation with stakeholders, partners, local government management and ministries, departments and agencies, successfully drafted a Tax Harmonisation Bill for local governments and ministries, departments and agencies that has passed through the House of Assembly’s legislation process and will soon be ready for use in the state.”
Dasogo called on the people the people of the state to embrace the culture of voluntary tax compliance so as build a Plateau State that every one will cherish.
