Organised labour in Rivers State on Friday gave the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, and the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mbu Joseph Mbu, a 21-day ultimatum to apologise for dispersing 13,000 teachers on September 25.
The police had chased away newly-recruited teachers who came to pick their deployment letters.
Ahmad Muhammad, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, had alleged that the teachers’ gathering was illegal and that they were hired to carry out a protest against President Goodluck Jonathan.
Chris Oruge, the state chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, told newsmen in Port Harcourt, Rivers State that labour would embark on an indefinite strike action if their demand was not met.
Oruge said the teachers were assembled by the State Universal Basic Education Board to collect their posting letters at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt.
He said: “Reports reaching organised labour said that the police used tear gas and all manner of uncivilised tactics to chase away these workers who are our members.
“Consequently, the organised labour in Rivers State demands an unreserved apology from the Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police.”
Oruge said labour had written to its national body on the decision taken and would also send similar letters to the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission.
Chika Onuegbu, the state chairman of Trade Union Congress, said the action taken against the teachers was undemocratic.
Onuegbu said organised labour would not allow such impunity to continue.
