The Nigerian Union of Teachers, Lagos State Chapter, has urged Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to hasten the appointment of primary school teachers as headmasters-general.
The union chairman, Segun Raheem, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Lagos that this was one of the union’s pending requests before the state government.
Raheem said that the union made several requests, which the government had been fulfilling.
He said: “The Lagos State Government has done well in granting our requests.
“I must commend what the governor is doing in the education sector.
“He has been forthcoming in infrastructural development, provision of learning materials, the training and retraining of teachers and consistency in the payment of salaries, allowances and prompt promotion.’’
The chairman also lauded the state government for making it possible for teachers in primary schools to rise to Grade Level 17 before retiring.
He said the union was optimistic that the governor would ensure that primary school teachers rise to the position of permanent secretary in the state civil service.
Raheem said: “If some secondary school teachers can rise to the position of permanent secretary, then we can also have headmaster-general as equivalent to permanent secretary.
“The governor has promised to do it before the end of his tenure and we pray that God gives him the wisdom to implement it.’’
On the proposed national minimum wage, He said that the increase from N18,000 to N66,500 was long overdue because of the harsh economy in the country.
He said that the cost of living had changed since 2011 when the Federal Government approved N18,000 as the minimum wage for workers.
Raheem said that between 2011 and date, the price of every good in the market had increased.
He said: “We came to an agreement that the minimum wage for any Nigerian worker should not be less than N66,500.
“The Lagos State Government has assured us that the moment it has been approved by the Federal government, it will comply.’’
