NUT to meet over non-payment of teachers’ salary

The Nigerian Union of Teachers said on Thursday in Abuja that it would meet next week to decide on actions to be taken over the non-payment of teachers’ salary in some states.

Michael Olukoya, the NUT National President, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

Olukoya did not say the exact date of the meeting but advised his affected colleagues not to wait for the union before taking decisions that would benefit them in the face of the situation they found themselves.

He said: “The union shall meet next week to take a decision on this pathetic situation.

“I will advice that the states involved should not wait until teachers’ union give them directives.”

Olukoya advised the government to cut down on the cost of governance to prevent future occurrence of the non-payment of staff salaries.

“To forestall a recurrence, government should avoid profligacy; government size should be pruned,” he said.

NAN reports that Plateau, Benue, Abia, Kogi, Ekiti, Osun and Oyo among other states owe teachers’ salaries for not less than four months, while Kano State has not paid its newly employed teachers for three months.
