Abdulwaheed Odusile, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, on Tuesday commended the Federal Government over the successes recorded in the fight against insurgency and corruption in the country.
Odusile gave the commendation in Abuja at a meeting of the National Executive Council of the NUJ with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.
Odusile, who called for transparency in the fight against corruption, urged government to adhere to the provision of the rule of law in the fight.
He said: “Devoid of politics, I have not seen any Nigerian that is not in support of government’s strive in the fight against corruption.
“We join other Nigerians to commend the successes recorded and encourage government not to be deterred when people say the fight is lopsided.
“We will also like to commend the efforts of the Federal Government in the area of security, especially in the North East.
“It is worthy of commendation to note that no part of this country is currently under the control of the insurgents.
“Now that these territories have been recovered, I urge government to do its best to return the IDPs to their communities.”
The NUJ president advised the government to expedite actions to rehabilitate and make the ravaged communities conducive for the displaced persons.
In his remark, Lawal, who urged the media to perform its role to the fullest, called on members of the profession to ensure that the public was adequately and truthfully informed.
He said: “I enjoin you to go out there and tell Nigerians the truth about the state of the nation.
“You must examine the anti-corruption war dispassionately and educate Nigerians on whether or not the war is indeed selective and whether innocent citizens are being harassed or not.”
Lawal promised that the Federal Government was open to constructive criticism that would enhance the realisation of its goals.
