The Nigerian Communications Commission on Friday said Nigeria’s teledensity stood at 107.01 per cent as at June.
Teledensity is also known as telephone penetration, which translates to the percentage of Nigeria’s population using phones.
The statistics is contained in the commission’s Monthly Subscriber/Teledensity Data made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
According to the data, the country’s teledensity stood at 107.01 per cent as at the end of June, with active telephone lines of 149.8 million.
The commission said the teledensity was calculated based on population estimate of 126 million up till December 2005.
It said from December 2006, the teledensity was based on a population estimate of 140 million.
The commission said from December 2001 to 2006, teledensity was based on connected subscribers, while from December 2007, it was based on active subscriptions on mobile networks.
The data showed that the teledensity stood at 106.27 per cent in June 2015.
In July 2015, the telephone penetration moved to 107.67 per cent.
It moved up to 107.87 per cent in August 2015, 107.61 per cent in September and at the end of October, the figure declined to 107.57 per cent.
It said in November and December 2015, the figures moved to 107.66 per cent and 107.87 per cent respectively.
The teledensity increased to 108.11 per cent in January 2016, but declined to 106.16 per cent in February, then up to 106.25 per cent in March 2016.
It said the telephone penetration decreased to 105.41 per cent in April 2016, but moved up to 106.32 per cent in May.
The teledensity rose by 0.69 per cent from May 2016 to attain 107.01 per cent in June 2016.
