Nigeria’s former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has called on Nigerians to emulate the unique qualities of the late Waziri of Ilorin, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki, as bridge builders, philanthropists and grass root politicians.
Babangida said this in Ilorin on Monday at the Government House, when he led a delegation, which included former Head of State, General Abubakar Abdulsalam; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ambassador Babagana Kinkigbe; Alhaji Umaru Ndanusa; and Alhaji Abubakar Muye on a condolence visit to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed over the death of Saraki.
The former military President described Saraki, the Second Republic Senate Leader, as one Nigerian who worked tirelessly for the emergence and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.
Babangida averred that Saraki left behind a legacy of selfless service, adding that it would be an understatement to say Saraki “touched the lives of virtually everybody in this country, as he was one politician that had impact across the entire nation.”
Ahmed, in his response, noted that Saraki had national goodwill, despite the fact that he was never the president of the country.
According to the governor: “Senator Abubakar Olusola Saraki was one of the very few national bridge builders who were not presidents.”
Ahmed assured the former presidents and their entourage that Saraki’s legacy of building an egalitarian society would be continued in order to keep his memory alive.
