The Niger State Government on Wednesday disclosed that it will construct an additional 1,000 housing units before the end of this year, adding that 500 each of the houses will be constructed in Minna and Suleja.
Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu, who made this known when he received the management of an indigenous firm, Italworks Nigeria Limited, the company that will handle the project, said the idea is to reduce housing deficit facing the two towns in the state.
Aliyu directed the Ministry of Lands to make available the necessary documents to the construction firm so that actual work will commence immediately.
The governor admonished the company to ensure that they keep to the terms of the agreement, adding that government will not hesitate to revoke the contract if the company was found to be in breach of the agreement.
Aliyu noted that the administration had gone into partnership with many companies to provide cheap and decent houses for the people because of its belief that if people were made to live in decent environment, they will give their best to the service of the state and the nation.
Earlier the Project Coordinator, Benjamin Charles, assured the governor that the project will be delivered within the contract period as the company was sure of credit facilities from commercial institutions so long as the government played its part of the agreement.
Charles told Aliyu that the exact prices of the houses will be worked.
He however said the houses will be within the reach of the average person in the state.
He said government will be expected to provide social amenities in the estates.
Before now, the state government has constructed houses in Minna, Bida, Kontagora and Suleja for middle level and high income earners as well as for the general public at drastically subsidised rates.
