The Nigeria Copyright Commission on Wednesday arraigned a first-year student of the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, Uche Ezeodili, for allegedly pirating DSTV.
The accused was brought before the Federal High Court in Enugu on a one-count charge of commercialising the services of Multi Choice Nigeria Limited, known as DSTV, without the authority of the owner.
The counsel to the prosecutor, Paul Anagonye, said the officers of the NCC and DSTV went on a visit to the premises of the accused in Achara Layout, Enugu on March 21.
Anagonye said that his client found pirated TV content, which were exclusive to DSTV in the accused person’s house.
Anagonye said that his client found a series of decoders and their smart cards with the accused.
He said that Aljazeera was active in the accused person’s house when the officers came calling even though he was not at home.
He said that his client also found sports content such as English Premier League and Spanish La Liga matches, which were exclusive to DSTV.
The prosecution counsel said the accused had a wire, which he used to supply those channels to his customers’ homes.
He said the accused was still in prison custody.
Anagonye said the NCC officers took the inventory of the whole devices in the home of the accused and took them to their office.
However, the counsel to the accused, Samuel Chukwuani, said there was no electricity supply on the faithful day throughout the neighborhood of the accused.
Chukwuani also said the decoder was not functional because there was no power supply and wondered how the NCC officials got to know the content.
Justice Dorothy Agishi adjourned the case to July 16 for further hearing.
