NCC announces March 25 for take-off of MNP

The Nigerian Communications Commission has said the implementation of the Mobile Number Portability service would commence on March 25, 2013.
The Head, Media and Public Relations of the NCC, Reuben Muoka, in a statement on Saturday, said the Commission has decided to commence the MNP a day earlier than scheduled.
Muoka said in the statement: “It is going to be launched commercially on March 25 and with the initial start-off, only the Global System for Mobile communications operators will be porting.
“Telecommunication subscribers can only port among the GSM operators, and subsequently, the Code Division Multiple Access operators will be part of it.
“As we know, both are mobile but with somewhat different technologies; we wanted to take it bit by bit to ensure that it is effective.
“As soon as the GSM takes off, it will not be long before the CDMA also begins its operation on MNP.”
The MNP is to enable consumers to choose or do away with their GSM service provider and still retain their numbers.
However, only mobile phone users who have registered their soil cards will benefit from the service.
