A traditional ruler and 12 others persons have been arrested in connection with the killing of four students of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The traditional ruler is the Aluu in Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers.
Twelve indigenes of the town were also arrested in connection with the killing of the students identified as Ugonna, Llyod, Tekana and Chidiaka.
They were killed on Friday after they were stripped naked, beaten and set ablaze.
They were alleged to have stolen a Blackberry and a laptop.
The killing of the students was captured on video by their killers and later circulated on social media.
According to available information, Llyod and Ugonna are cousins.
Llyod is said to be a rapper who recently emerged winner of a popular rap contest show called ‘Turb Show’ on Silverbird Television, PortHarcourt.
The spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Ben Ugwuegbulam, confirmed the arrest of the traditional ruler and 12 of his subjects.
Ugwuegbulam said: “Amazing success has been recorded in that regard as 13 persons, including the chief of the community, suspected to have been involved
in the reprehensible, barbaric act have been arrested, based on credible intelligence and video clips of the killings.
“The Command sympathises with the families of the slain students and also appeals to them not to take the laws into their hands.
“Students of UNIPORT are urged not to engage in reprisal attack as such could lead to chaos and anarchy.”
The suspects are being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
