About 64 out of the 275 inmates who escaped during the gunmen attack on the Minna Medium Security Prison have been re-arrested.
This is just as the Comptroller General of Prisons, Dr. Peter Ezenwa Ekpendu, confirmed that the 211 inmates are still at large.
The Comptroller General, who arrived the Minna Medium Prison on Sundaymorning, said the attack has no link with the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
According to him: “Two hundred and eleven prisoners are still at large as search parties have been sent out to different parts of the state and around the state to ensure that the escaped prisoners are recaptured.
“The incident is very unfortunate, embarrassing and completely unacceptable.
“My administration will not spare any officer found culpable in this particular matter and anybody found guilty must face the full wrath of the law.
“Pre-report shows that there is no evidence to link Boko Haram to the prison break incident of Saturday.”
Speaking to newsmen after interrogation of the prison officials and inspection of the prison yards, Ekpendu said that he has ordered the immediate transfer 55 officers from the state and zonal headquarters offices to be posted to the Minna Medium Security Prison and Minna Old Prison to beef up the security in these prisons.
The Comptroller General then assured President Goodluck Jonathan and the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, that the security challenges facing the prisons will be tackled head-on.
He said: “I am assuring Mr. President and Minister of Interior that the security challenges facing us will be tackled head-on.
“Justice must be done and sanity must be restored the security of the prisons and all prisons is paramount.”
It would be recalled that on Saturday, unknown gunmen attacked the Minna Medium Security Prisons as 275 inmates escaped.
The gunmen broke into the armoury and record rooms and carted away weapons and bullet proof vest.
The armed men, numbering three, stormed the prison facility well dressed in “Jalamia” at about 4:30pm.
“They disarmed the prison officials and overpowered them.
