The Environmental Health Department, Aba South Local Government of Abia, has arrested two members of staff of Junifon Nigeria Limited, a public toilet/waste disposal operator in Aba, for allegedly channeling human waste into the streets.
A director in the department, Onyinyechi Nwaigwe, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday, adding that the suspects had been arraigned at an Aba Magistrates’ Court.
Nwaigwe alleged that the company situated at 1/3 Asa Road, Aba, channeled excreta from a septic tank into the gutter.
She said that the waste flowed down the drain to York Street and Aba Town Hall, located at the council headquarters.
She said that an abatement order had also been issued to the company to reconstruct its septic tanks and channel its waste properly or be ready to face the wrath of the law.
Nwaigwe said that the company had, in April, been issued a similar abatement notice, threatening that “this second abatement notice would be the last warning to the company”.
She added: “It will no longer be business as usual for the company and its likes.
“This department under my watch has declared war against environmental pollution and will work tirelessly to make Aba safe and healthy for residents.”
