In furtherance of their consultations with past Nigerian leaders, four Peoples Democratic Party northern governors met with former Vice President Alex Ekwueme in Abuja on Saturday.
In attendance at the closed door meeting were Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, Muritala Nyako of Adamawa State, Sule Lamido of Jigawa and Magartaka Wamakko of Sokoto State.
The Special Assistant to Governor Kwankwaso, Baba Dantiye, who confirmed the meeting to The Eagle Online, said Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State could not attend because he is in Saudi Arabia for Lesser Hajj.
The governors, including Governor Aliyu, it will be recalled, had met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his Hill Top residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State last week.
Interestingly, as President Goodluck Jonathan, who had also come to confer with Chief Obasanjo was leaving the residence, the governors came in to hold tete-a-tete with him.
From Abeokuta, the governors train moved to Minna, Niger State, where they also conferred with former Military President Ibrahim Babangida and former Head of State, retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Thereafter, they met with former President Shehu Shagari in Sokoto, Sokoto State.
It was also gathered that the governors would have met with former Head of State, retired General Yakubu Gowon, but he was out of the country hence they decided to meet with former Vice President Ekwueme.
The five governors have not been on good terms with the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party and President Jonathan over their decision to confer with the past leaders.
It is on record that they supported Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s second term reelection bid as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, which did not go down well with the Presidency and the PDP that wanted the Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, to lead the body.
