Chief Owolabi Salis, the Alliance for Democracy governorship candidate in Lagos State, says he will promote culture and tradition because of his firm belief in them as the peoples’ way of life, if elected.
Salis made the promise on Friday when the Lagos State Chapter of Igunuko Cultural Group (traditionalists) declared its support for his candidacy.
The group made the declaration at the Igununko 2018 Cultural Festival, held in Mafoluku, Oshodi area of the state.
He said: “I am a believer in tradition and culture. Culture is important to me, so we will raise African culture.
“African culture is the number one transnational culture in the world.
“Yoruba is the third, when I say transnational; I mean a culture that is practiced by other races. African culture is after Christianity and Islam.”
He hinted on some of his plans for the state to include declaring “Isese Day” and modernising some shrines to make them more attractive than they were.
Salis said: “There is nothing bad in declaring “Isese” Day which is a day that will be set aside to celebrate culture and worship gods.
“I will invest heavily in culture. I’m going to visit some shrines and tell you how to modernise them. Culture is one of the reasons I am in this race.”
The Chairman of the group, Mudashiru Macaulay, said that it was the first time they were having someone who had passion and valued tradition and culture.
Macaulay said. “We endorse your candidacy based on the promises you made that you will declare and set aside a day to celebrate “Isese” day.
“We express our enthusiasm for this is the first time that a member is coming out boldly to contest for the number one seat in the state.”
