The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, has called on Christians in the country to pray for a smooth transition of elected leaders.
The transition takes place on May 29 at the federal and state levels where there were elections.
Kaigama made this call during the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organization celebrations day and the 49th World Communication Day, which is observed by Catholic media practitioners of Nigeria.
The event was held at St Monica’s Parish in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The Bishop tasked all members to pray for the success of Barrister Simon Lalong as he takes over the mantle of leadership of the state from Governor Jonah Jang.
He urged the governor-elect to use his office to reconcile all ethnic nationalities on the Plateau.
Kaigama said: “We need to pray for all the elected leaders not to waste our time on celebrations because the task ahead of them is big as we hope for a better Nigeria.”
Kaigama challenged mothers to be good home builders by inculcating good moral conducts that will help the larger society through child training.
He called on women in Plateau State to ensure that they focus more on child upbringing and not to neglect the welfare of their children.
He urged media practitioners to remain objective in their reportage and avoid sensational journalism that would always create misunderstanding in the society.
He also used the occasion to pray for the safety of all media practitioners on the field all time.
He said: “I know that journalism remains the pillar of unity as well as destruction if apply wrongly.
“But I urge you all to remain objective in your writings.
“I know how risky the profession is.”
A former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Dame Pauline Tallen, stressed the need for the involvement of more women in national issues because they play a vital role in managing the home.
Tallen condemned in its totality the neglect of women on issues of national development.
She advocated for the appointment of women in the incoming administration.
Earlier the Catholic Media Practitioners of Nigeria, Jos chapter had held a one-day workshop to commemorate the 2015 World Communications Day.
A communique issued at the end of the session, signed by the Chairperson, Rev. Sister Theresa Guzuma, urged media practitioners thrive in their callings to encourage effective communication among spouses for better upbringing of the family.
It also stressed the need for couples to observe love as key at the centre of every communication and strengthening moral teachings as well as praying fervently.
It also challenged Catholic Media Practitioners to set the pace in sponsoring radio and television programmes that will encourage and develop good value and faith.
