Serena Teluwo, Reya Holmes, Daniel Adeleye and Gabriel Inyang headline invited players for Nigeria to the forthcoming ITF/CAT West and Central Africa 12& under Championships billed for April 25th – 30th in Lagos.
Nigeria’s junior tennis coach, Mohammed Ubale, disclosed that other players that are called up for the team event expected to feature about 12 countries are David Ekpeyong, Iye Onoja and Oiza Yakubu.
The invitation of Teluwo and Holmes was the reward for their impressive showings at last month’s SNEPCO championships, where 10-year-old Serena, daughter of former VIP FC of Lagos owner, Adewale Teluwo, triumphed in a keenly-contested final.
On her part, Holmes, 10, who featured alongside her sister, Lolade, against Serena and Venus Williams in an exhibition game in Lagos during the highly-publicized visit of the American superstars to Nigeria in 2012, has developed to one of the leading players in her category.
Adeleye from Ekiti State participated at the ITF/CAT Junior Championship in Morocco last year and has won a number of domestic tournaments recently, while Inyang has also stepped up his game which saw him won two junior tournaments last year in the US while on a training tour.
Ubale disclosed that while Adeleye, Inyang and Ekpeyong are assured of their places in the championship.
One of the girls will be dropped as there are just three places for each country in a team.
The boys and girls finalists will qualify for the African Junior Championships slated for Casablanca, Morocco in September.
