The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday in Abuja sworn-in a new Resident Electoral Commissioner, Elder Monday Tom.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu at the ceremony said the appointment of Tom, from Akwa Ibom, brought the total number of RECs nationwide to 36 saying the Commission was awaiting the confirmation of the nominee from Osun State to make it 37.
Yakubu while congratulating Tom on his appointment, advised him to be open to stakeholders and be guided by rules and regulations in the discharge of his duties.
He said: “As REC you will also be responsible for the implementation of the Commission’s policies.
“In doing so, you will exercise supervisory control over personnel, resources as well as the legal and administrative processes in the state to which you are posted.
“You will also interact with various categories of stakeholders. In doing so, you must maintain the required openness and consultation.
“At the same time, you must be very firm and courageous on the side of the law as well as our regulations and guidelines at all times as required of an unbiased umpire.”
He announced the deployment of Tom to Bayelsa State.
He, however, disclosed that the commission had already implemented 10 out of the 14 activities in its timetable and schedule of activities for the forthcoming election.
He said: “The final list of candidates for Governorship, State Assembly and FCT Area Council election will be published in all our states offices nationwide and the Commission’s website, on Thursday.”
In his response, Tom pledged to carry out his duty with all sense of responsibility, fairness and fear of God.
Tom said: “I am a man of God; I want to promise that I will bring that to bear in my conduct throughout my stay as INEC’s REC. I will make sure that every Nigerian is treated equally.
“I am contented with whatever is due to me. I will not go beyond what is mine in order not to undermine the integrity of myself and that of the commission.’’ Tom, whose nomination was confirmed on Thursday by the Senate, holds a BSc Degree in Biological Science and a Master’s Degree in Microbiology. He served as a lecturer after working in the civil service in Akwa Ibom.
