The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnik, has pleaded with Nigerians to support the Super Eagles’ goalie, Carl Ikeme, with prayers.
Ikeme will begin his course of chemotherapy immediately and will likely face a lengthy battle against acute leukaemia.
Reacting to the development, Pinnick said: “To fellow Nigerians, we call on the entire football fraternity to join us in praying for Carl, and wishing him the very best as he faces an arduous but not impossible journey to full recovery.
“We at the NFF heard with heavy hearts, the devastating news of Super Eagles’ goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, being diagnosed with acute leukaemia.
“Carl is a complete gentleman, a serious professional and one who has served the senior national team very well.
“When we receive such news, it is with mixed minds – devastation, yes, but also with renewed strength and the fighting spirit that is associated with Nigerians. It is this strength that we want Carl to show, and that is what we believe will see him through.”
The NFF boss however urged the Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper to be strong at this trying time.
“To Carl, we say – stay strong, have faith and belief. People have made complete recoveries from this; and you will.”
