The Police has discovered four bodies of women in a room at Olisa Onyeka Crescent, Commissioners’ Quarters at Ifite in Awka South North Local Government Area of Anmabra State.
The women were said to have died on Saturday night without the knowledge of their neighbours or any visible sign of injury.
One of them was an employee of the State Independent Electoral Commission, Chinwe Obi.
Obi, who was said to be the main tenant, was also the Electoral Officer of Onitsha.
The landlady of the building, Ify Onyebumuo, said she was contacted on the phone by one of the tenants who complained that they had not seen the deceased since Saturday and that there was odour oozing out of her room.
Onyebumuo said: “The tenant said that awful water was dropping out from the room of the deceased and she had not picked her calls since Sunday.
“The deceased has been a tenant in the building for 11 months.”
On his part, the caretaker of the building, simply identified as Machie, said he was contacted on his mobile phone by some tenants who told him of their suspicion that people might have died in the room.
Another tenant claimed that the husband of the deceased, based in Cotonou, came on a visit but died in the same room a day before the four women died.
According to him, the man’s body was deposited in the mortuary.
When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Hassan Karma, said some of the tenants reported to the police that they perceived awful odour coming out of the room and that the occupants of the room could not be reached.
Karma also confirmed that the husband, who came on a visit, died in the same room on Friday.
The commissioner noted that the other three women, whose identities were yet to be ascertained, were members of the woman’s church who came to sympathise with her over the sudden death of her husband.
He, however, said his men discovered a pot of soup suspected to be full of carbon monoxide or poison and a generator in the room.
The commissioner disclosed that the soup would be tested later, while the bodies had been taken to the mortuary for post-mortem.
Karma promised that the police would continue in their efforts to ensure the safety of lives of property of the citizens of the state.
He said investigations were on to determine the cause of the death of the four women.
