The Hadejia Emirate Council in Jigawa has distributed over N12.1 million Zakat to 3,992 less privileged people in the area.
Malam Muhammad Talaki, the Emirate’s spokesman, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria in Dutse on Saturday.
NAN reports that zakat is the payment made annually by wealthy individuals under the Islamic law on certain kinds of property and used for charitable and religious purposes.
It is one of the five pillars of Islam and serves as a means of wealth distribution and poverty reduction.
Talaki said that the Zakat consisted of 998 sacks of assorted grains, 36 goats, two cows and N269,000 cash.
He said the items were distributed on Friday to indigent families in Karar Bale village of Balangu in Kafin-Hausa Local Government Area of the state.
He explained that the zakat was distributed by the Chairman, Zakkat Collection and Distribution in the emirate council, Alhaji Abdulfatah Abdulwahab.
According to him, Abdulwahab reaffirms the commitment of the council towards the propagation of Islam through wealth redistribution to reduce poverty in the area.
He said: “The chairman urged wealthy persons to always support the vulnerable and less privileged in the society to reduce poverty in the area.
“Abdulwahab also commended individuals, who voluntarily gave out the zakat in support of the needy.’’
