An Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr. Vincent Ojini, on Thursday advised women seeking pregnancy through the In Vitro Fertilisation to reduce carbohydrate intake.
Ojini, who is the Medical Director of a Lagos-based private hospital, JayCee, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
He advised women to increase intake of protein to increase chances of conception through IVF.
He said: “A healthy diet is very necessary to achieve a healthy pregnancy and birth.
“Carbohydrate-based diets create a hostile environment in the body even before conception.
“The effect of a healthy diet is usually at the egg level.
“So, increasing protein will produce good, healthy eggs and the possibility of conception.”
The consultant urged that more research and studies should be carried out on infertility to assist more couples to achieve conception and raise families.
Ojini said that infertility remained a problem for many couples, adding that many couples were ignorant of where to seek medical assistance.
He said: “Patients are visiting doctors who are not specialists when it comes to infertility treatment.
“Such patients end up spending a lot of money without getting pregnant.”
He said that people should visit specialists when they encounter problems that require their services.
