The Edo State Police Command said on Wednesday that unknown gunmen killed two policemen and injured three others on Ikiran-Oke Road in Akoko/Edo Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Foluso Adebanjo, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin.
Adebanjo said that the incident occurred when the gunmen opened fire at the 18-seater police bus with registration number NPF 3148 C, conveying the occupants to Lagos from Abuja.
He said that the attack on the policemen took place near Ibilo at about 11:30am.
Adebanjo said that an Inspector and two other policemen, who survived the attack, were receiving medical treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
He said that the attackers, who were dressed in military uniform, flagged the police bus and opened fire.
The police commissioner said that the remains of the deceased policemen had been deposited at the mortuary of Anyakur Specialist Hospital in Akoko-Edo.
