Fraud: EFCC arraigns Oronsaye, opposes his bail application

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arraigned a former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Stephen Oronsaye, over allegations of corrupt practices.
Oronsaye was arraigned before a Federal High Court presided over by Justice Gabriel Kolawole in Abuja on Monday.
As at the time of filing this report, Oronsaye’s counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), was locked in a battle with the prosecutor of the EFCC, Aliyu Yussuf, over whether the court should grant bail to the accused and his co-accused, Oluwole Aladedoye.
Agabi said under the new Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, an accused person was entitled to bail based on oral application.
Yussuf, however, said oral application for bail was not permitted in view of the provisions of section 162 of the ACJA.
He said bail could only be granted judicially and judiciously and based on materials in the form of affidavit evidence placed before the court.
Yussuf asked the court to remand the accused persons in prison.
He equally sought an adjournment till Wednesday to enable him respond to the written bail applications filed by the defence.
Oronsaye was arraigned on fraud and money laundering charges.
Oronsaye and Aladedoye pleaded not guilty to the 24 counts.
