Thirteen Remo Stars players and official are down with food poisoning ahead of their Week 28 Nigeria Professional Football League tie against FC IfeanyiUbah.
The club’s Secretary, Michael Onikute, who confirmed the development, said the affected players and officials are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Ikenne, Ogun State.
According to Onikute, 13 first-team Remo Stars players, including the club’s leading goal scorer, Victor Mbaoma, Ekene Awazie and Salefu Ochowechi were affected.
Also receiving treatment are Umar Martaba, Oknuoghae Osas, Edozie Ewelike, Onovo David, Ekene Awazie, Abiodun Awoyemi, Ekene Obi, Saidu Muhammed, Paul Isaac the reserve goalkeeper, David Walbe, Shuji Oshobe, Akeem Taiwo and Mbaoma, while goalkeeper trainer Dahiru Ilu is the only affected official.
Onikute however suspected that a fumigation exercise on Friday might have caused the food poisoning rocking the NPFL side camp.
“The fumigation was done to keep the players safe but we didn’t know it was going to be counter productive,” he regretted.
Remo Stars are currently languishing in the relegation zone on the Nigeria Professional League table.
