FG donates N30m to families of slain polio workers in Kano

The Federal Government on Thursday announced a donation of N3 million to each family of the 10 polio workers killed early this year during immunisation.
Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso presented the cheques for the amount to the families of the slain workers in Kano on behalf of the Federal Government.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Director, Press and Publicity, Governor’s Office, Malam Halilu Dantiye.
The statement said Kwankwaso remarked that the donation was to complement what the state government and Alhaji Aliko Dangote donated to the families shortly after the incident.
Kwakwanso said the slain health workers were patriots who sacrificed their lives while trying to protect communities from the menace of polio.
Kwankwaso, however, assured the people of the state that “the wicked attack on the health workers” would not stop the government from its anti-polio campaigns.
He appealed to the citizens of Kano State to support government’s efforts to eradicate polio from the state and protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases.
The governor enjoined bereaved families to take solace in the fact that their bread winners died in the service of humanity.
Kwakwanso blamed the recent polio cases in some local government areas on laxity by some health officials and traditional rulers handling routine immunisation.
Gunmen on February 8 opened fire on the female immunisation personnel at Shargalle and Hotoro Haye Health Centres in two separate attacks.
