Environmental workers in Akwa Ibom State, mostly road sweepers, are lamenting both delay and unpaid wages months after they have been working daily to keep the metropolis clean
Some others are saying that they do not even know their pay packages as everything about their recruitment is shrouded in secrecy
They are therefore calling on Governor Umo Eno to take over the payment and at the same time order a forensic audit into why some of them receive N30,000, others receive N25,000, while others are yet to receive anything almost three months after their engagement.
The workers also complained that while the staff of the agency overseeing them don’t come out to monitor as they are sweeping the roads, they only stay in their offices to make deductions of their wages over claims that they failed to sweep the roads.

On Saturday at about 5:30am, our reporter, following the outcry, spoke with some road sweepers who volunteered insights to the allegations, however opting not to be named for fear of losing the job.
They disclosed that even the recruitment was done in secrecy.
On Ossong Ama Estate Road, a sweeper said though she is aware two of her colleagues have received the wage for the first time since January 2025 when they were recruited, she and some others on the same road were yet to get theirs.
On Mbak Road linking the ring road and Nnwaniba, a sweeper, who hinted a friend linked her to a contractor who has never spoken to her on terms of engagement, disclosed that she was at the mercy of the contractor since she does not have any other means of survival.
