Fayemi monitors compliance with new petrol price

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, today paid petrol stations in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, unexpected visits aimed at ensuring that they complied with the new pump price of N97 per litre.

Fayemi had earlier on Monday directed the Petroleum Task Force to monitor the filling stations in the state and ensure that petroleum products were available and prevent the citizens from being shortchanged.

The governor, who drove himself in a private Toyota Avensis, started the monitoring at about 11am.

The monitoing took him to nearly all the filling stations in the state capital.

At a filling station in Old Garage, the price on the fuel pump was N140 but the petrol attendant claimed that fuel was sold for N97.

Fayemi, however, urged the attendant to change the price to N97, warning that government may clampdown on the station should it be discovered that it sold fuel at the old exorbitant rate.

Some of the filling stations did not sell fuel and claimed that they had no fuel but the governor insisted on checking their tanks to confirm the claim.

One of them at Ori Apata area of Adebayo Street was said to have stopped selling fuel since January last year while some others had their attendants either sleeping or discussing with consumers who came to buy fuel.

After the monitoring exercise, it was gathered that virtually all the filling stations had complied with the new pump price.

Many of the consumers and passers-by who could easily identify the governor hailed him, saying that the gesture would help curb any filling station with the intention of selling fuel at N140.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, told journalists at the end of the exercise that the governor was moved by reports of alleged manipulation and profiteering by some marketers.

Oyebode said: “You will recall that Mr. Governor had in his statewide broadcast on Monday directed the Petroleum Task Force to monitor all the filling stations in the state to ensure compliance with the new price regime. This is just to demonstrate the seriousness of the governor on the matter. So far, I can say the governor is satisfied with the level of compliance.”
