Family members of the late Minister of State for Labour, James Ocholi (SAN), on Monday said they suspected foul play in the death of the Minister; his wife, Blessing; and son, Joshua.
They said the suspicion arises from the suspected behaviour of the driver of the Sport Utility Vehicle in which the deceased were killed on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway on Sunday when they met their death.
The family members spoke when the Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige, visited the house of Ocholi in Abuja.
The family members, including Ocholi’s uncle, Abdallah Aliu, told Ngige that there was the need to investigate how the driver was employed and if truly some incidents happened during the trip.
Ali said: “Distinguished Senator Ngige, I know you very well.
“When James Ocholi was told to work with you, I knew he was in good hands because the last time I saw you was in Anambra State, we ate with you in your house as a governor.
“This man that just died is not a lone person.
“We leave this responsibility in your care.
“Whoever recruited the driver and posted him should be investigated.
“It can happen to anybody.
“It can happen to any minister.
“It can happen because it has happened.
“So, we want to know who recruited the driver and at what speed (he was driving during) to the extent that the corpse of the deceased cannot even be recognised.
“Can you imagine that?
“I am worried.
“t is worrisome.”
In his response, Ngige said: “The acting Permanent Secretary is here.
“She is the one in charge of human resources.
“We will find out and investigate it.
“We will do, but I can tell you that our personal drivers are known to us and we both keep our personal drivers.
“We will find out and investigate this.”
The driver was accused of taking photographs and posting them to the Internet after the accident.
The family members contended that ordinarily, he should be unconscious.
They also queried the behaviour of the driver and Ocholi’s orderly who they accused of allowing the scene of the accident to be turned into a photo session one with several photographs of the accident.
The family is also working on the theory that the door by which Ocholi sat was not locked, hence he was flung out of the vehicle as it somersaulted and he could barely be recognised.
