The expulsion of Russian diplomats from Greece does not contribute anything positive to the bilateral relations between Moscow and Athens, Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.
“We always proceed from the premise that such moves as expulsions of diplomats have mirror consequences.
“These moves do not add anything positive to bilateral relations, but at the same time we believe that bilateral relations have value of their own.
“We are talking about practical cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries,’’ Zakharova said at a weekly briefing.
On Wednesday, the Greek Kathimerini newspaper reported that Athens had decided to expel two Russian diplomats and ban two more from entering the country over illegal actions that threatened the country’s national security.
The publication claimed that the diplomats attempted to intervene in a domestic issue, namely the changing of the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the Republic of North Macedonia, the agreement of which was brokered by Skopje and Athens in June.
