Enugu to implement new minimum wage February – Labour

The Enugu State Government says it will start the implementation of the new minimum wage in February, the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council has revealed.
The Chairman of the JPSNC, Chukwuma Igbokwe, disclosed this on Wednesday in Enugu while briefing newsmen at the Government House.
Members of the JPSNC were at the Lion Building to present the report of the negotiation of the consequential adjustment to the new minimum wage at the meeting of the State Executive Council.
Igbokwe said the state government had in December set up a committee to negotiate the consequential adjustment to the new wage.
He said the committee had submitted its report on January 27 and was invited to present the same to the council.
He said by the agreement as presented and approved by the council, workers on Grade Levels one to six would have a 66.6 per cent increase in their salaries.
He said the percentage difference would be based on the difference between N18,000 and N30,000.
Those on Grade Level seven would have 40 per cent increase in their salaries and workers on Grade Levels eight to 14 would have 35 per cent increase.
Workers on Grade Levels 15 to 17 would have 10 per cent increase in their salaries.
Igbokwe said: “For now, organised labour is satisfied with the product of the negotiation considering that as of now our salaries are low.
“We took into consideration the available resources in the state.
“However, this is what will keep us going while we watch the finances of the state.”
Igbokwe said the next task for organised labour was to push for the harmonisation of pensions.
The chairman said current retirees would wait for the harmonisation of their pensions, while new retirees would have their benefits adjusted in line with the new minimum wage as applicable in the state.
