No fewer than eight persons were confirmed dead and 12 injured in the explosion that occurred on Monday afternoon at the School of Hygiene, located at the Bayero University Kano old site in Kano State.
The explosion occurred at about 2:05pm on Monday.
Eight vehicles parked inside the school premises were destroyed.
The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Adenrele Shinaba, confirmed the bomb blast.
Shinaba, who spoke with newsmen at the scene of the blast, said an unidentified suspect has been arrested and was undergoing interrogation.
He said: “We are yet to establish whether the bomb was planted inside the school premises or was primed inside a vehicle.
“But all we can say is that an explosion occurred in the School of Hygiene on old site BUK Road at about 2:05pm.”
Shinaba disclosed that the bodies of the dead have been deposited at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital mortuary, while the injured were evacuated to the emergency ward of the hospital.
The students were in the school for registration.
While those of them who had concluded their registration and those who had gone to pray had finished and were about leaving the school premises, the explosive device was detonated.
One of those who died was a Fulani woman, who had come to sell Fura Dai Nono in the school.
Malam Abdulkarim Umar Bashir, the Personal Assistant to the school’s Provost, Dr. Ado H. Bello, narrowly escaped.
Bashir said: “As I just left the Mosque, shortly after the afternoon prayer, I saw the Provost in his blue Matrix car attempting to park.
“And as soon as I removed the parking sign board, the Provost drove into the parking lot and within a twinkle of an eye, an explosion occurred.
“But thanks be to God that I and the provost escaped unhurt.”
