The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Edo is to deploy 5,000 personnel for Saturday’s Local Government Election in the state.
The Commandant of the Corps in the state, Makinde Ayinla, disclosed this on Thursday in Benin during the grand finale of activities to mark the International Civil Defence Organisation day.
Ayinla said the personnel would be deployed to various polling units and flash points to avoid man-made disaster during the poll.
He urged residents of the state to be proactive in disaster management.
Ayinla said the theme of the 2018 ICDO day “Civil Defence and National Institutions For Efficient Disaster Management’’, was apt in view of the ravaging effect of disaster in the society.
He said that disaster which was multidimensional, could be man-made or natural.
He said: “Pro-activeness by all will forestall the ravaging effects disaster have on both man and the environment when it happens.
“In view of this, there is the need for `all hands to be on deck’, especially relevant disaster management agencies, in ensuring quick response to disaster.
“This Command in fulfillment of the Corps’ core mandate, has done well in the protection of national critical assets, as well as crises and disaster management, especially with regards to herdsmen and farmers conflict.
“This Command has also ensured that only registered Private Guard Companies operate in the state and NSCDC is fully checking the activities of anti-vandals in the state.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that papers were also presented at the occasion which included “Capacity Building toward Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Edo”, by Monday Etenfukan, Officer in Charge of Training in the Command.
