Diversion of N1t: Senate ignores PDP caucus, proceeds with Larmode’s probe

The Senate has ignored pressure from the Peoples Democratic Party senators caucus to drop the investigation of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Larmode, over the alleged diversion of N1 trillion.
The PDP senators had kicked against the scheduled investigative hearing of Lamorde over the alleged diversion of N1 trillion.
The money was said to be funds recovered from a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Dipreye Alamieyeseigha, and a former Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun.
The Chairman of the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions of the Senate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, on Tuesday vowed to proceed with the already scheduled probe of the EFCC boss.
Anyanwu, who is also a member of PDP Senate caucus, said his colleague’s position on the issue was done out of misinformation and the issue had already been sorted out.
Although the caucus as at press time has not come out to refute their opposition to the probe.
The chairman said: “I’m answerable to the Senate in the first instance.
“Two, this Committee attends to every petition that comes from the public.
“And the invitation to the EFCC boss is one of those petitions and the petitioner is going to appear before the Committee.
“And if you look at the press statement by the Minority Leader of the party, Senator Godswill Akpabio, it was a misinformation.
“There was an amendment of a motion at the floor of the Senate where the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor was to be invited with the EFCC boss regarding money laundering and all that.
“But we stood it down.
“So, there was a misinformation.
“So, he thought that it was the same issue.
“But this is a petition against the person of the EFCC boss.
“He (Majority leader) called and he felt sorry about that.”
